Myriam Gämperli
Myriam Mizzo Gämperli, born in 1982 in Jonschwil (Switzerland), graduated with a Master of Art and Design from the Hochschule Kunst & Design, Luzern. Publications are a treasure trove that Mizzo first raided for motifs such as forks, knives, heads, hands, torsos and tails. These images come to life in her collages and drawings. Mizzo builds on this tradition of disruption; her arrangements balance recognition and unfamiliarity. That mixture of the known and the unexpected often generates humour, though that element of comedy also illustrates the tension generated by powerful juxtapositions. The displacement of body parts, if torsos and heads seem independent of each other, for example, interrupts how an image is read and makes the viewer look twice. Mizzo creates a space where hierarchies are turned upside down, gravity is overcome and bodies freed from their limitations. These disturbances are unsettling, though also liberating. Through her unlikely conjunctions, the darker and dynamic facets of Surrealism come to light. By taking images apart, breaking them down and suturing them together again, our fantasies are triggered. Mizzo lives and works in Zurich.
