Roman Blumenthal, born in 1980 in Chur (Switzerland), graduated with a Master in Fine Arts from the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK). Several time winner of the art grant from the city of Zurich, Blumenthal's bold, reduced forms, inhabit his canvases, recounting everyday storylines. His idiosyncratic, truncated personages, objects and shapes are at once pop and poetic, humorous and daring. The viewer is invited to play with their own interpretations, a sort of mind game of rebellious associations, timeless, devoid of any particular cultural reference or movement yet reminiscent of a mix of all of them. Roman works slowly and meticulously with oil, charcoal and collage mostly on cotton, ranging from explosions of vivid block colour to sharp confident lines, pressed on the material with thick oil stick. Roman lives and works in Zurich.
